La Belle au Bois Dormant

A classic fairy tale in five chapters, retold for beginners

Once upon a time there was a king and queen who had wanted a child for a very long time. One day, finally, a little princess is born.

The king and queen are overjoyed. They organize the biggest celebration the kingdom has ever seen to celebrate this birth.

The king organizes a great celebration for the christening. He invites seven fairies from the kingdom to be the princess's godmothers.

The castle's great hall is decorated with flowers, golden ribbons, and long tables covered with delicious dishes for the guests.

Each fairy gives the child a magic gift: beauty, intelligence, grace, a beautiful singing voice, and many other wonderful talents.

The guests applaud after each gift. They are very surprised by the fairies' generosity and by the little princess's good fortune.

Suddenly, an old fairy that no one invited enters the hall. She is furious: she did not receive an invitation.

Silence falls over the hall. No one dares speak while the old fairy slowly approaches the princess's bed.

"When the princess turns sixteen," she says meanly, "she will prick her finger on a spindle and die!" Everyone is very shocked.

The queen bursts into tears, and the king turns as pale as a ghost. A few seconds earlier, the party was joyful. Now it turns into a nightmare.

Luckily, the youngest fairy hasn't given her gift yet. She can't completely cancel the curse, but she can make it less serious.

"The princess will not die," she says. "She will sleep for a hundred years, and a prince will come wake her up."

To protect his daughter, the king gives an order: all the spindles in the kingdom must be destroyed. But you cannot change the future so easily.

The years pass, and the princess grows up, beautiful and kind, loved by the whole kingdom.

She knows nothing of the curse — her parents decided never to tell her about it, so as not to worry her.

On the day of her sixteenth birthday, she explores the castle and discovers a small tower she has never visited.

A narrow, dusty stone staircase spirals up toward the top. The princess, curious, decides to follow it.

At the top of the tower, she finds an old woman spinning wool with a spindle. The princess has never seen such an object before.

"What is that?" she asks curiously. "May I try?" The old woman, who is actually the wicked fairy in disguise, smiles.

"Of course, my dear," she says in a sweet voice. "Come closer, it's very easy." The princess approaches. She does not know what is about to happen.

The princess takes the spindle in her hands. Immediately, she pricks her finger.

She immediately falls into a deep magical sleep. The curse has come true, despite all the king's efforts.

She is gently carried to her bed, in her room. She looks simply asleep, calm, with a faint smile on her lips.

The good fairy quickly arrives and, with her magic wand, puts the whole castle to sleep: the king, the queen, the servants, even the animals and the fire in the fireplace.

She thinks it is kinder this way: the princess will wake up in a hundred years, surrounded by the people she knows and who love her.

A huge forest of trees and thorns quickly grows around the castle. It hides the castle, and no one can see it anymore.

Chapitre 3 — Cent Ans Plus Tard

A hundred years pass. The castle sleeps, hidden behind its huge forest of thorns.

Over time, the story of the castle becomes a legend, then almost a fairy tale that parents tell their children at night.

Many princes try to cross the forest to discover the mystery of the sleeping castle, but the thorns stop them all.

Some come back injured, others never come back. Little by little, no one dares approach the cursed forest anymore.

One day, a young prince from a neighboring kingdom hears a legend: a magnificent castle sleeps behind the forest, with a princess who has been asleep for a hundred years.

An old man from the village tells him the whole story in detail. His eyes are shining. "A hundred years, exactly a hundred years as of today," he says.

Le prince est curieux et courageux. « Je dois voir ça de mes propres yeux », décide-t-il.

The prince is curious and brave. "I must see this with my own eyes," he decides.

His advisors try to stop him from leaving — the forest is dangerous, they say. But nothing can stop the young prince.

He approaches the thorn forest. To his great surprise, the branches gently part to let him through. The curse is about to end.

The prince crosses the silent forest and arrives in the castle courtyard. He sees the guards sleeping, standing, weapons in hand.

A thin layer of dust covers everything, but nothing is damaged. It looks like time stopped one day, all at once.

He enters the castle and discovers the king and queen asleep on their thrones. The servants are asleep everywhere too, not moving at all.

Chapitre 4 — Le Baiser et le Réveil

Le prince continue d'explorer le château silencieux. Il cherche l'origine de la légende.

The prince continues exploring the silent castle. He looks for the origin of the legend.

He crosses huge corridors, decorated with paintings and dusty carpets. He does not see anyone.

He climbs a narrow staircase and arrives in the small tower, at the very top of the castle.

Sunlight comes in through a small window and gently lights up the room, as if it had been waiting for this exact moment.

There, on a bed, he discovers the sleeping princess. She is so beautiful that the prince immediately falls in love with her.

He stands still for a long moment, not knowing what to do. His heart beats very hard in his chest.

He kneels beside her, very surprised. Without really thinking, he leans down and gently kisses her.

At that exact moment, the princess opens her eyes. The hundred years of magical sleep are finally over!

"There you are, finally," she says softly. It seems like she has been dreaming of him for a hundred years.

They look at each other, without a word, for a long moment. The world seems to stop just for them.

At the same moment, the whole castle wakes up: the king, the queen, the servants, the guards, even the fire in the fireplace starts burning again.

In the kitchens, the meals interrupted a hundred years earlier start cooking again. Nothing has changed during all that time.

Everyone is confused at first, then very happy to understand that the curse is finally broken.

Chapitre 5 — Le Mariage

The king and queen are overjoyed to see their daughter finally awake. They thank the prince with a big smile.

The king organizes a great meal that evening, a hundred years after her sixteenth birthday. He wants to celebrate all that lost time.

During the meal, the prince tells the story of his long journey: the legend heard in the village, the thorn forest, and his arrival in the silent castle.

The prince asks for the princess's hand in marriage, and she happily accepts — she feels like she has known him forever.

A great celebration is organized throughout the kingdom to celebrate the princess's awakening and her upcoming wedding.

The seven good fairies are invited and offer even more magic gifts for the young couple's happiness.

The wedding takes place a few weeks later, in the castle's great hall, decorated with flowers and lights.

The princess wears a magnificent dress, decorated with gold, and the prince an outfit as elegant as the day they met.

The whole population of the kingdom comes to celebrate. Everyone is happy: the long curse is finally over.

People dance and sing late into the night, and no one, this time, falls asleep by magic — only from tiredness and joy.

The princess and the prince live happily together, surrounded by their family and friends, for the rest of their lives.

This story reminds us that even the darkest times eventually pass, and that patience is sometimes rewarded.
