Le Chat Botté

A classic fairy tale in six chapters, retold for beginners

Once upon a time there was a miller who had three sons. When he dies, he leaves the mill to his eldest son, a donkey to the second son, and a cat to the youngest son.

The two older brothers are happy with what their father left them. Together, they can run the mill and carry the flour sacks with the donkey.

The youngest son is sad. "My brothers can work together with the mill and the donkey," he thinks, "but I only have a cat!"

He sits sadly in front of the little house, wondering how he will live with so little.

The cat, who hears everything, suddenly says: "Don't worry, master. Just give me a pair of boots and a bag, and I will help you."

The young man is very surprised. A talking cat! But he has nothing to lose, so he buys boots and a nice bag for the cat.

The cat puts on his new boots. He is very proud. From that day on, everyone calls him Puss in Boots.

He looks at himself in the water, very proud of his new boots, and heads toward the nearby fields.

Puss in Boots takes the bag and heads out into the fields. He puts carrots and lettuce in the bag, then he lies down and plays dead.

He waits patiently, without moving and without making a sound.

A curious rabbit goes into the bag to eat the vegetables. The cat closes the bag immediately!

Puss in Boots has a plan. He's going to offer this rabbit to the king, saying it's a gift from his master, the "Marquis de Carabas."

But the young man isn't a marquis at all! It's a name the cat invents to make his master seem more important.

In front of the castle's great doors, two guards stop the cat. "A cat wearing boots who talks like a man?" they say, very surprised, before letting him in.

Puss in Boots goes to the castle and asks to see the king. "I bring a gift from my master, the Marquis de Carabas," he says.

The king, pleased to receive such a fine rabbit, says: "Thank your master for me."

The whole court watches the scene with surprise. No one has ever seen a cat bow so politely before a king.

Puss in Boots keeps up this trick for several months. He hunts partridges and rabbits in the fields and offers them to the king, always in the name of the Marquis de Carabas.

Each time, the cat leaves with a small gold coin that the king gives him as thanks. He keeps it carefully in a little bag.

Little by little, the king starts to know this name well. "The Marquis de Carabas is really generous," he often says.

One day, the cat learns important news: the king is going for a walk by the river with his daughter, the princess, who is very beautiful.

The cat smiles and thinks quickly. This is the perfect chance to finally introduce his master to the king in person.

Puss in Boots runs to see his master. "I have a plan," he says. "Go bathe in the river, exactly at the spot I show you, and let me do the rest."

The young man doesn't fully understand, but he trusts his cat. He gets into the water and starts to swim.

The cat hides his master's old clothes behind a big rock. Then he waits, hidden in the grass, for the king's carriage to approach.

In the distance, he can already hear the sound of wheels and horses. The royal carriage is slowly approaching along the river.

When the king's carriage approaches, Puss in Boots starts shouting: "Help! Help! The Marquis de Carabas is drowning!"

The king puts his head out of the carriage window to see what is happening. He recognizes the cat's voice right away.

The king recognizes the cat who has given him so many fine gifts. He orders his guards to help the marquis immediately.

The guards jump into the river and pull the young man out of the water. He coughs a little, but he isn't badly hurt.

While the young man is being rescued, the cat explains to the king: "Thieves stole my master's clothes while he was swimming!"

It's a lie, of course — the cat hid them himself! But the king doesn't know that.

The king finds this story of thieves terrible. "I will have those thieves punished!" he says, very angry at people who don't even exist.

The king orders his servants to bring one of his finest suits for the "marquis." The young man, dressed richly, suddenly looks very elegant.

The princess, watching the scene, finds the young man very charming. She blushes a little.

The young man, surprised by so much attention, suddenly remembers his cat's words. He begins to understand the plan.

The king invites the Marquis de Carabas to climb into the carriage with them. The young man accepts, a little nervous, but very happy.

Puss in Boots, satisfied, runs ahead of the carriage. "Now," he says, "I must prepare the next part of my plan!"

Puss in Boots runs very fast ahead of the king's carriage. He arrives in a large field where harvesters are cutting wheat.

The sun is high in the sky and the harvesters are working hard, their shirts soaked with sweat. They stop, surprised to see a cat in boots running toward them.

"My friends!" shouts the cat. "When the king asks you who this field belongs to, say it belongs to the Marquis de Carabas. Otherwise, you'll have big trouble!"

The harvesters are afraid of the mysterious talking cat. They agree right away.

They look at each other, a little worried. "A cat who talks and gives orders... better to obey him," mutters one of the harvesters.

When the carriage arrives, the king asks exactly that: "Who do these fine fields belong to?"

« Au marquis de Carabas, Majesté ! » répondent les moissonneurs, tous ensemble. Le roi est très impressionné.

"To the Marquis de Carabas, Your Majesty!" the harvesters answer, all together. The king is very impressed.

The marquis, sitting in the carriage, says nothing. He starts to understand his cat's plan and smiles quietly.

Puss in Boots keeps running ahead of the carriage. He does the same thing in every field and with every group of workers he meets.

He crosses many fields and farms, always tired but always faster than the carriage.

Everywhere, the king hears the same answer: "This land belongs to the Marquis de Carabas." He is more and more impressed by the young man's wealth.

"Your family must own half the kingdom," the princess says to the marquis with a big smile.

In reality, these fields all belong to a terrible ogre who lives in a large castle, very close by.

Puss in Boots arrives at the ogre's castle well before the king's carriage. He knocks hard on the door.

The castle is huge, with tall grey towers and dark windows. A frightened servant slowly opens the door.

The ogre, very rich and powerful, also has the magical power to transform into any animal.

The cat enters the great hall and bows politely before the ogre. "Sir, I have heard so many wonderful things about your powers. I wanted to see them with my own eyes."

"They say you can transform into a lion," says the cat admiringly. "Is that true?"

The ogre, proud of his powers, immediately transforms into a huge, frightening lion. Puss in Boots is very scared!

The cat quickly climbs onto a cabinet to escape the lion's claws. His boots slip on the polished wood, but he manages to escape.

« Impressionnant ! »

"Impressive!" says the cat, once the danger has passed. "But transforming into a small creature, like a mouse, must be much harder, right?"

"Hard? Watch!" And, a little offended, wanting to prove he can do anything, the ogre immediately transforms into a small grey mouse.

This is exactly what Puss in Boots was waiting for. In an instant, he pounces on the mouse and eats it!

The cat catches his breath, pleased with his trick. Silence now fills the great empty castle.

The ogre disappears forever. The castle, with all its riches, now has no owner.

When the king's carriage arrives, Puss in Boots is waiting, very proud, in front of the gates of the magnificent castle.

"Welcome to the castle of my master, the Marquis de Carabas!" announces the cat.

The former ogre's servants, now free, welcome the guests with big smiles. They are already preparing a big meal.

"Such a beautiful castle, in addition to so much land!" says the very impressed king. "You would make an excellent husband for my daughter."

The young man, who wasn't expecting any of this, is very surprised but happily accepts.

The princess, meanwhile, has already fallen in love with the charming marquis during the carriage ride.

The king arranges everything right away. Messengers leave at once to announce the news throughout the kingdom.

The wedding takes place that very day, in the castle's great hall, with a magnificent celebration.

There is music, dancing, and an enormous cake that the young couple shares with all the guests.

Puss in Boots becomes a great lord at court. He no longer hunts mice to eat — except for fun, from time to time!

He is often seen walking through the castle gardens, his boots always shining, greeted with respect by all the servants.

The once-poor young miller now lives happily in his castle, with the princess and his loyal friend, Puss in Boots.

This story teaches us that intelligence and cunning can sometimes achieve more than wealth or strength.
