The conditionnel softens what you say. With devoir, pouvoir, aimer and falloir, it's how French gives advice, makes suggestions and talks about wishes: "Tu devrais te reposer." (You should rest.)

Devoir — donner un conseil

  • tu devrais + infinitif: Tu devrais boire plus d'eau. — You should drink more water.
  • vous devriez: Vous devriez réserver une table. — You should book a table.
— We ought to leave before eight.

— We could go to the cinema tonight.
  • tu pourrais… ?: Tu pourrais fermer la fenêtre ? — Could you close the window?
  • si on + imparfait ?: Si on allait à la plage ? — How about going to the beach?

Aimer — un souhait

  • j'aimerais + infinitif: J'aimerais visiter le Japon. — I'd like to visit Japan.
— I'd rather stay at home.

— If I were you, I'd take the train.

Répondre

  • accepter: On pourrait sortir ? — Bonne idée ! — Shall we go out? Good idea!
— Sorry, I can't, I have to work.
