Le Futur Simple

The simple future expresses events that will happen, predictions, and promises. Unlike the near future (aller + infinitive), it is formed with a single verb.

Formation régulière

  • -er / -ir → infinitif + endings: parler → je parlerai | finir → tu finiras — to speak → I will speak | to finish → you will finish
  • -re → drop final -e + endings: prendre → il prendra | vendre → nous vendrons — to take → he will take | to sell → we will sell

Les terminaisons (Endings)

  • je -ai, tu -as: Je parlerai demain. Tu arriveras à midi. — I will speak tomorrow. You will arrive at noon.
— She will leave early. We will finish soon.
— You will wait here. They will leave by plane.

Radicaux irréguliers (Irregular stems)

  • être → ser-: Je serai là. Nous serons prêts. — I will be there. We will be ready.
  • avoir → aur-: Tu auras le temps. Ils auront faim. — You will have time. They will be hungry.
  • aller → ir-: Elle ira à Paris. Vous irez au marché. — She will go to Paris. You will go to the market.
  • faire → fer-: Je ferai les courses. Tu feras la vaisselle. — I will do the shopping. You will do the dishes.
  • venir → viendr-: Il viendra ce soir. Nous viendrons demain. — He will come tonight. We will come tomorrow.
  • pouvoir → pourr-: Elle pourra venir. Ils pourront rester. — She will be able to come. They will be able to stay.

Quand l'utiliser ?

— Tomorrow, it will rain and it will be cold.
— I will call you tonight, I promise!
  • Après "quand" (futur): Quand tu arriveras, appelle-moi. — When you arrive, call me.

Next summer, Léa will be eighteen. She has a big plan: she will go to Quebec on her own for a month. For a year now, she has been saving up to buy her plane ticket.

On the first day, she will arrive in Montreal. She will sleep in a youth hostel and she will ride around the city by bike. In the evening, she will try poutine and she will write a postcard to her grandmother.

Then she will take the train to Quebec City. There, she will visit the old town and she will speak French with everyone. "I'll see if Quebecers understand my accent!" she says, laughing.

In the second week, her cousin Hugo will come and join her. Together, they will go to Tadoussac and, if the weather is nice, they will see whales. They will have to get up very early, but it will be worth it.

Ses parents sont un peu inquiets. « Tu nous appelleras tous les jours ? » demande sa mère. « Oui, promis !

Her parents are a little worried. "Will you call us every day?" her mother asks. "Yes, I promise! And I'll bring you back some maple syrup," Léa answers. She already knows this trip will change her life.
