Malik a vingt-cinq ans. Il vient de trouver un travail à Lyon et il cherche un logement. Il veut habiter en centre-ville, près de son bureau.
Malik is twenty-five. He has just found a job in Lyon and he's looking for somewhere to live. He wants to live in the town centre, near his office.
Il regarde les annonces sur Internet. Les studios sont petits : souvent vingt mètres carrés seulement ! Un deux-pièces est plus confortable, mais aussi plus cher.
He looks at the listings online. The studio flats are small: often only twenty square metres! A two-room flat is more comfortable, but also more expensive.
Une maison individuelle avec une terrasse et un garage ? C'est un rêve, mais c'est impossible avec son salaire. Malik décide de chercher un appartement.
A detached house with a terrace and a garage? It's a dream, but impossible on his salary. Malik decides to look for a flat.
Il va dans une agence immobilière. L'agent lui propose trois visites pour le samedi suivant.
He goes to an estate agency. The agent offers him three viewings for the following Saturday.
Le premier appartement est au rez-de-chaussée, dans une rue très bruyante. Le deuxième est au sixième étage d'un vieil immeuble sans ascenseur. Malik monte à pied et arrive sur le palier tout rouge !
The first flat is on the ground floor, in a very noisy street. The second is on the sixth floor of an old building with no lift. Malik walks up and arrives on the landing bright red!
Le troisième est parfait : il est lumineux, spacieux et refait à neuf. Le salon est ensoleillé tout l'après-midi. Il est même meublé, avec un lit, un canapé et une grande table.
The third is perfect: it's bright, spacious and newly renovated. The living room gets the sun all afternoon. It's even furnished, with a bed, a sofa and a big table.
La propriétaire, Madame Roux, explique les conditions. Le loyer est de 750 euros, plus 50 euros de charges pour l'eau et le chauffage. Le paiement est mensuel.

Pour louer l'appartement, Malik doit payer une caution d'un mois de loyer. Il signe le bail pour trois ans. Maintenant, il est locataire !
To rent the flat, Malik has to pay a deposit of one month's rent. He signs the lease for three years. Now he's a tenant!
Mais il y a un problème : l'appartement est disponible seulement en mars, à cause de travaux dans la salle de bain. Malik doit attendre six semaines.
But there's a problem: the flat is only available in March, because of work on the bathroom. Malik has to wait six weeks.
En attendant, il habite en colocation avec un ami, Théo. Son colocataire est sympa, mais il joue de la guitare tous les soirs jusqu'à minuit…
In the meantime, he lives in a flatshare with a friend, Théo. His flatmate is nice, but he plays the guitar every night until midnight…
Enfin, le 1er mars, Malik peut emménager. Le gardien de l'immeuble l'aide à porter les cartons. Il lui montre la cave, l'interphone et sa boîte aux lettres.
Finally, on 1 March, Malik can move in. The building's caretaker helps him carry the boxes. He shows him the cellar, the intercom and his letterbox.
Le soir, Malik rencontre ses voisins sur le palier. Le voisinage est calme et accueillant. Malik est content : c'est le premier appartement qu'il a choisi tout seul, et il a déjà envie d'inviter ses amis à le visiter !
In the evening, Malik meets his neighbours on the landing. The neighbourhood is quiet and welcoming. Malik is happy: it's the first flat he has chosen on his own, and he already wants to invite his friends round to see it!
