A classic fairy tale, retold for beginners
Once upon a time there was a little girl who lived in a village, near a forest. Her grandmother gave her a red hood, so everyone called her Little Red Riding Hood.
She lives with her mother in a small house at the edge of the village. Her grandmother lives alone, on the other side of the big forest.
One day, her mother said to her: "Your grandmother is sick. Bring her this cake and this little pot of butter."
"Okay, mom," says Little Red Riding Hood. She puts on her red hood, takes the basket, and says goodbye to her mother.
Little Red Riding Hood leaves right away. To get to her grandmother's house, she has to cross the forest.
The sun is shining and the birds are singing. Little Red Riding Hood walks calmly and looks at the pretty flowers along the path.
In the forest, she meets a big wolf. The wolf really wants to eat her, but he hears woodcutters very close by.
The wolf thinks: "This little girl will make a good meal! But the woodcutters are too close. I need to be smarter about this."
« Où vas-tu, petite ? » demande le loup. « Je vais chez ma grand-mère, de l'autre côté de la forêt », répond-elle.
"Where are you going, little girl?" asks the wolf. "I'm going to my grandmother's house, on the other side of the forest," she answers.
"Is it far?" asks the wolf. "Oh no," she says, "it's the first house past the big tree, near the mill."
"Take the small path," he says, "and I'll take the big path. Let's see who gets there first!"
Little Red Riding Hood happily agrees. She takes the small path and stops to pick flowers and chase butterflies.
The wolf runs very fast along the big path. He arrives first at the grandmother's house.
On the way, he tells himself: "I need to hurry, before she arrives." He doesn't stop even once.
Il frappe à la porte. Toc, toc. « Qui est là ? » demande la grand-mère.
He knocks on the door. Knock, knock. "Who's there?" asks the grandmother.
The grandmother is surprised. She isn't expecting a visit today. "Who's knocking so hard?" she wonders.
The wolf puts on a little voice: "It's your granddaughter, Little Red Riding Hood. I'm bringing a cake and a little pot of butter."
La grand-mère est contente. « Quelle bonne surprise !
The grandmother is happy. "What a nice surprise!" she says. She tries to get up, but she's too tired.
The grandmother is in bed because she's a little sick. She calls out: "Pull the string, and the door will open!"
The wolf pushes the door open gently. The house is small and quiet. He sees the grandmother in her bed, with a nightcap on her head.
He jumps on the grandmother and eats her whole, very quickly! Then he puts on the grandmother's clothes and her nightcap.
He waits for Little Red Riding Hood, hidden under the covers.
Dehors, tout est silencieux. Le loup sourit. Son plan fonctionne parfaitement.
Outside, everything is silent. The wolf smiles. His plan is working perfectly.
Toc, toc.
A little later, Little Red Riding Hood arrives and knocks on the door. Knock, knock.
She's a little tired after her walk through the forest, but her basket is full of pretty flowers.
"Who's there?" asks the wolf, in his little voice. The little girl thinks it's a bit strange, but she believes her grandmother has a cold.
She sets down her basket and looks around. The curtains are closed and the house is very dark. "That's strange," she thinks.
She goes into the house. "Put the cake and the little pot of butter on the table, and come lie down with me," says the wolf.
Little Red Riding Hood lies down. She looks at her grandmother and says: "Grandmother, what big arms you have!"
"All the better to hug you with, my child."
« Grand-mère, comme vous avez de grandes oreilles ! » « C'est pour mieux t'écouter. »
"Grandmother, what big ears you have!" "All the better to hear you with."
« Grand-mère, comme vous avez de grands yeux ! » « C'est pour mieux te voir. »
"Grandmother, what big eyes you have!" "All the better to see you with."
« Grand-mère, comme vous avez de grandes dents ! » « C'est pour mieux te manger ! »
"Grandmother, what big teeth you have!" "All the better to eat you with!"
And the wolf jumps on Little Red Riding Hood and eats her too. Luckily, some woodcutters hear the noise. They come in, catch the wolf, and save the grandmother and the little girl.
Everyone is very happy. The grandmother hugs her granddaughter, and the woodcutters take the wolf far away into the forest.
Little Red Riding Hood and her grandmother drink hot chocolate together and tell the story again and again.
